Bernadette Peters, 1977 — One of the most critically acclaimed performers of her time, Bernadette Peters has impressed audiences and critics alike with her performances on stage, on television, on screen and in concert. This Tony Award-winning actress has been said to be one of the finest singing actresses to come along since Barbra Streisand. A native of Ozone Park, New York, Peters was born Bernadette Lazzara, later changing her last name to Peters for fear she would have trouble securing non-Italian roles. She made her Broadway debut in 1967 in “Johnny No-Trump,” and in 1968 starred with Joel Grey in the musical “George M!,” earning a Theatre World Award for her memorable portrayal of Josie Cohan. To date, Peters has received numerous accolades throughout her distinctive career, including two Tony Awards, numerous Tony and Emmy nominations, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the honor of being the youngest inductee into the "Theatre Hall of Fame". She is most well known for her performance as Annie Oakley in the 1999 Broadway revival of “Annie Get Your Gun”. When this photo was taken, Peters was alternating between successes on the screen and on stage. She currently resides in New York and Los Angeles with her husband, investment adviser Michael Wittenberg.
