Cher, 1974 - Chart-topping singer, television star, Academy Award-winning actress, disco diva, and fashion icon, Cher is an index of everything that is hot and current as well as to what is lasting and timeless.  Born in El Centro California in 1946, Cher (full name, Cherilyn Sarkisian) left high school at age 16 to pursue an acting career in the city of Los Angeles.  Less than a year later, she met her soon to be co-star and first-husband, Sonny Bono at Aldo’s Coffee Shop in 1963.  When Scavullo took this photo, Cher was just 28 years old, and still soaring on the public’s radar from her success with “The Sonny and Cher Show.”  Scavullo has said of this icon, “Cher adds something special to America.  It’s glamour.  She’s more than a beauty, she’s a phenomenon.  She creates excitement with much more than her looks, it’s her talent, her sense of comedy, her warmth.”  Although Scavullo could not have predicted it, Cher’s fame would extend to movies (winning a best actress Oscar for her role in “Moonstruck”) and continued success as a recording star.  Deemed fashions ‘shock innovator’ for reasons both good and bad, Cher has continued to live up to this title throughout her career.
