Diana Ross, 1979 — One of the most glamorous (and photographed) celebrities of her day, Diana Ross’ beauty was only exceeded by her talent. Born Diane Earle in 1944, she grew up in a Detroit housing project where, at age 15, her talent was quickly recognized, her rise to fame soon to become a certainty. Diva and undisputed Queen of Motown, Ross went from lead singer of The Supremes (originally the Primettes) to a hugely successful solo career spanning more than four decades. Considered one of the most successful female artists of her era, she ties Elvis Presley with the most #1 hit songs to her credit (18). Scavullo dubbed her “The Beautiful Boss”, and this shot became the cover for her 1980 solo album, “Diana”. He photographed Diana Ross and Cher countless times over the course of their careers and in this instance, he convinced Diana to pose, quite uncharacteristically, with wet hair, no makeup, ripped jeans and a wet T-shirt. Not knowing what to make of the resulting shot, Diana showed the picture to Cher who told her “Look, girl, that’s the best picture ever taken of you.” Ultimately, Ross agreed and authorized the photograph to be used for the album cover, the image becoming symbolic of her natural beauty and celebrity, she becoming immediately recognizable worldwide.
