Sting

Sting, 1984 - Named after a yellow and black striped rugby shirt he used to wear, “Sting,” nee Gordon Matthew Sumner, went from his initial career as an English teacher in a British primary school, to lead singer and base player for the Grammy-Award winning rock trio, “The Police.” The son of a milkman, Sting grew up knowing he wanted to be a musician. He started by performing on cruise ships and in cabarets, gradually developing a love for the bass guitar. It was 1977 when “The Police” began their decade-long tenure as a chart topping and widely popular rock group. Amazingly, the band’s, “Every Breath You Take,” is officially the most requested radio song of all time, and the single still yields Sting a daily royalty of $2,000. Francesco Scavullo shot this photo of Sting the year “The Police” broke up, which they did at the height of their popularity. After the break-up, Sting went on to a hugely successful solo career in music, film and literature, writing his highly anticipated autobiography, Broken Music, in 2003. That year, “The Police” were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to his career of recording and performing, this conscientious celebrity campaigns actively for Amnesty International and various environmental causes, including the Rainforest Foundation, which he established to help raise awareness of the need to preserve the Brazilian rainforest. Having draped Sting in a Halston scarf for this shot, Scavullo described him as “a man who’s not afraid of his own vulnerability.” Sting currently spends his time with his movie-producer wife, Trudie Styler, at their homes in London, New York and Malibu.
