About the Work

Salvador Dalí is commonly regarded as one of the greatest Surrealist artists, whose personality was often displayed on his magnificent works of art. He practiced sculpting, advertising, printmaking, fashion, filmmaking and more. Dalí’s mischievousness and peculiar personality contributed to his rise to become an international celebrity, but he is better known for his most distinct attribute: his mastery of art. Dalí’s significance and talent rank him among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century.

Our Historical Heritage is a portfolio that shows Dalí’s influence from religious themes. The portfolio, Our Historical Heritage, depicts events and historical figures from the Hebrew scriptures (The Torah or Old Testament), curated with the signature style only found in Dalí’s work. This series also includes Jeremiah, Joseph, The Rock, and more. Each image showcases Dali’s master draftsmanship. King Saul was the first King of Israel and predecessor to King David. Saul did not like David and made many failed attempts to take David’s life. Saul offered David his daughters twice, yet David refused both offers. King Saul led many military campaigns during his reign and contested many victories in battle. To avoid being captured in battle, Saul fell on his sword, ultimately ending his life. King Saul has been the inspiration for many different works in art and literature throughout history.

“King Saul” by Salvador Dalí is a magnificent work of art, which highlights Dalí’s skill and religious influence. This image depicts King Saul’s face up close. He has dark brown eyes and dark lips; his skin is a fair color. Saul’s beard and eyebrows are long, thick and grey. His crown is bright gold, yet it is not adorned with any gems or crystals. Saul gazes creepily back at the viewer, and his eyes are deep and hypnotic. Dalí uses many deep line strokes to emphasize where he wants the viewer to look, primarily directly in the eyes of King Saul. “King Saul” is a 22 x 15.5-inch hand-signed engraving created in 1975 from the Our Historical Heritage series.

Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century, partially due to his explorations of subconscious imagery.
