About the Work

Salvador Dalí is commonly regarded as one of the greatest Surrealist artists, whose personality was often displayed within his magnificent works of art. He practiced sculpting, advertising, printmaking, fashion, filmmaking, and more. Dalí’s mischievousness and wonderful personality contributed to his status as an international celebrity, but he is better known for his most distinct attribute: his mastery of art. Dalí’s significance and talent rank him among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century. "Adam and Eve" is a hand-signed engraving in the Le Paradis Perdu series. The image size is 10.5 x 8.25 - inches.

Regarded as one of the most important works in literature, John Milton’s Paradise Lost (Paradis Perdu) was illustrated in ten color etchings by master Salvador Dalí in 1974. The simplicity of line and careful draftsmanship exhibit the very turmoil of man’s battle with the temptation of Satan. This series is noted as having some of Dalí’s sharpest lines.

This beautiful image displays the story of Adam and Eve in Milton's text. On the left, we have, presumably, Adam in the nude. Adam has long curly hair and a dark curly beard. His armpit and chest hair can be seen because his arms are raised. Opposite of him, Eve stands with her beautiful volumized hair. She too has armpit hair, yet her waist is thin, and her hips and thighs are wide. Between the two figures, a large elegant flower stands tall with leaves sprouting from its stem. Perhaps the two lovers are frolicking through an overgrown field, considering the plethora of leaves and flowers surrounding them. Interestingly, neither figure has facial features, which makes the identification of both up to interpretation. This factor is part of the magic that composes Dalí's surrealistic style.

Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century, partially due to his explorations of subconscious imagery. He practiced sculpting, printmaking, fashion, advertising, filmmaking and more.
