flare-for-the-dramatic-v-scotty-2013
Flare for the Dramatic V (Scotty), 2013

"Flare for the Dramatic V (Scotty)" is an acrylic on canvas painting created by Robert Deyber in 2013. The artwork is signed 'DEYBER' lower right. The artwork ships framed in a contemporary black frame and has a framed size of 39.75 x 49.75".

Created in 2013, "Flare for the Dramatic V (Scotty)" brings Deyber’s characteristic wordplay to life through an unexpected theatrical spectacle. At center stage, a Scottish Terrier balances confidently on one leg beneath a brilliant spotlight, juggling seven blazing emergency flares. Trails of smoke rise from the glowing red signals, introducing both movement and an element of precarious danger to the otherwise composed performer. The absurdity of the scene is heightened by Deyber’s careful realism: the more convincingly the impossible event is painted, the more delightfully surreal it becomes.

Framing the composition along the upper and side edges, a rich red stage curtain transforms the landscape into a theater, while the darkened trees beyond create an atmospheric backdrop for the illuminated dog. The contrast between the shadowy landscape, dramatic spotlight, and brilliant flares gives the painting the cinematic quality of a performance caught at its climactic moment.

With its playful title, "Flare for the Dramatic V (Scotty)" turns the familiar expression “flair for the dramatic” into a wonderfully literal visual pun. Yet beneath its humor lies the sophisticated tension that makes Deyber’s work so engaging: realism meets impossibility, language becomes image, and an ordinary phrase is transformed into an unforgettable scene. The result is a witty and beautifully executed example of Deyber’s distinctive contemporary Surrealism.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1551/3581/files/ORDEY151213__P-Image_flare_for_the_dramatic_v_ordey151213_pimage_74ace7e7-1711-4fb2-9724-6b209be9974f.jpg?v=1791574433
