About the Work

“The Order of the Seeing Eye in the Hand” is loosely based on historical paintings from fraternal orders such as the Odd Fellows and Free Masons. Keen to explore the notion of symbolism, in a surrealistic sense, as it relates to the life of an artist, or “The Art Life.” Anne Faith Nicholls created her own empowering coat-of-arms depicting that which is important to the creative spirit. The symbols in the artwork are “All Seeing Eye.” “Snake and The Arrow,” “Knife and the Rope,” and “Clouds and the Moon.” “All Seeing Eye” represents awareness, surveillance, and wisdom. It may also symbolize one who takes leads from visual cues, and finds beauty in all. “The Snake and the Arrow,” represent the juxtaposition and contrasts that exist between a straight and narrow path versus a windy, curvy path that one can choose at their own free will. The knife and the rope are symbols of remembrance of conscious. The clouds and the moon symbolize the passing of rainy (bad) days and the promise of nightfall, which will always bring about a new day to start fresh. “The Order of the Seeing Eye in the Hand” is a 48 x 48 – inch acrylic and gold enamel on hand-aged canvas.

About the Artist

Anne Faith Nicholls is a truly unique addition to the contemporary art scene—she provides a refreshing look at the soul of the modern woman and artist. Born with a backwards heart, Nicholls has an inner strength that is inspirational and captivating. Her sense of adventure and exploration began in Victoria, British Columbia. Restless to travel to new places, she made her journey south to San Francisco, graduating from the Academy of Art University, and then on to Los Angeles where she resides today. She has traveled the world with a focus on studying the masters. This commitment to traditional painting has contributed to the development of her own unique style of utilizing both oil and acrylic to achieve a signature layered look and a saturated, antiqued, color palette.
