"Beautiful Elephant in a Tutu Painting" is a hand-signed household gloss on canvas painting created by Damien Hirst in 2007. The canvas size is 35.5 x 35.5" and the artwork is framed in a contemporary white frame. The artwork ships framed.
Since the 1960s, spin painting has been a pop culture phenomenon. Damien Hirst, winner of the Turner prize, and Britain’s top living contemporary artist is its master. Like all of his spin paintings, the title starts with ‘beautiful’ and ends up with ‘painting’.
Hirst first encountered spin painting, aged nine, at a London Street fair. Using a rotating high-speed turn table, spin painting relies on centrifugal force to push paint outward as the artist applies it in a succession of layers from a squeeze bottle, producing amazing abstract effects. The lacquered, reflective quality in this great example, its frilly edges, and delicate pink, perfectly evokes a ballerina’s tutu, while a blue elephant is suggested in the right middle of the painting with its long trunk extending through the center to the opposite edge of the canvas.
