About the Work

Salvador Dalí was an author, critic, impresario and provocateur. He became part of the art scene in 1929, thus becoming one of history’s most prolific artists. His fantastic imagery and flamboyant personality contributed to him becoming the best-known artist of the Surrealist movement of the late 1920s and early 1930s. He is known for his enigmatic and extraordinary paintings of dreamscapes and religious themes. Dalí always took risks in his art and his personal life. He fearlessly embraced his boundless creativity and created visionary work.

Our Historical Heritage is a portfolio that shows Dalí’s influence from religious themes. The portfolio, Our Historical Heritage, depicts events and historical figures from the Hebrew scriptures (The Torah or Old Testament), curated with the signature style only found in Dalí’s work. This series also includes Jeremiah, King David, The Rock, and more. Each image showcases Dali’s master draftsmanship. His father favored Joseph over all of his brothers. His brothers grew very jealous of him, and they eventually plotted to kill him. Eventually, they decided to sell him into slavery to some merchants. Joseph excelled at his tasks, yet was falsely accused of rape and sent to jail. Much of the fascination behind Joseph’s life comes from his ability to remain faithful to God and be strong in the face of difficult circumstances.

“Joseph” by Salvador Dalí is a magnificent work of art, which highlights Dalí’s skill and religious influence. Joseph can be seen in this image nude and hanging over a well. Joseph looks defeated as his long hair dangles down over his shoulders, and he sways in the wind. Around the well are a skull and a few shrubs. The land is desolate. There is a figure that seems to be hoisting him down from this position. In the background, a man is wearing red robes walking across the land and mountains further behind. “Joseph” is a 22 x 15.5-inch hand-signed engraving created in 1975 from the Our Historical Heritage series.

About the Artist

Spanish Artist Salvador Dalí was a Surrealist icon best known for his articulate skill and exquisite works of art. Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century, partially due to his explorations of subconscious imagery. He practiced sculpting, printmaking, fashion, advertising, filmmaking and more. His flamboyant personality and mischievousness contributed to his rise to becoming an international celebrity, however, his mastery of art is arguably his most distinct attribute.
