About the Work

Salvador Dalí was an author, critic, impresario and provocateur. He became part of the art scene in 1929, thus becoming one of history’s most prolific artists. His fantastic imagery and flamboyant personality contributed to him becoming the best-known artist of the Surrealist movement of the late 1920s and early 1930s. He is known for his enigmatic and extraordinary paintings of dreamscapes and religious themes. Dalí always took risks in his art and his personal life. He fearlessly embraced his boundless creativity and created visionary work.

Our Historical Heritage is a portfolio that shows Dalí’s influence from religious themes. The portfolio, Our Historical Heritage, depicts events and historical figures from the Hebrew scriptures (The Torah or Old Testament), curated with the signature style only found in Dalí’s work. This series also includes Jeremiah, King David, The Rock, and more. Each image showcases Dali’s impeccable draftsmanship. Noah’s Ark is perhaps one of the most well-known Bible stories. In this tale, God decides to purge the earth of its evils and destroy all living things. God spares Noah and his family’s lives and instructs Noah to build a massive vessel, or ark, to survive the great flood. God orders that Noah must build the ark of gopher wood and take seven pairs of clean animals, one male, and one female. That way all living things can repopulate once the purging has ended. So, Noah does as he is told, and the flood begins. The great flood lasted over 150 days and killed all the living things on land.

“Noah’s Ark” by Salvador Dalí is a magnificent work of art, which highlights Dalí’s skill and religious influence. The large vessel depicted here is, in fact, Noah’s Ark, with its many levels and windows. It seems as this image takes place after the flood has ended. The ark is hoisted upon large boulders, signifying that it had been moved there by the flood’s forces. Bones are scattered across the ground, and the world feels desolate, aside from the ark. At the tip of the ark a man, presumably Noah, is extending his arms outwards to catch the incoming dove. Two beautiful rainbows are beaming through the sky onto the land. “Noah’s Ark” is a 15.5 x 22.25-inch hand-signed engraving created in 1975 from the Our Historical Heritage series.

About the Artist

Spanish Artist Salvador Dalí was a Surrealist icon best known for his articulate skill and exquisite works of art. Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century, partially due to his explorations of subconscious imagery. He practiced sculpting, printmaking, fashion, advertising, filmmaking and more. His flamboyant personality and mischievousness contributed to his rise to becoming an international celebrity, however, his mastery of art is arguably his most distinct attribute.
