About the Work
Salvador Dalí was an author, critic, impresario and provocateur. He became part of the art scene in 1929, thus becoming one of history’s most prolific artists. His fantastic imagery and flamboyant personality contributed to him becoming the best-known artist of the Surrealist movement of the late 1920s and early 1930s. He is known for his enigmatic and extraordinary paintings of dreamscapes and religious themes. Dalí always took risks in his art and his personal life. He fearlessly embraced his boundless creativity and created visionary work.
Our Historical Heritage is a portfolio that shows Dalí’s influence from religious themes. The portfolio, Our Historical Heritage, depicts events and historical figures from the Hebrew scriptures (The Torah or Old Testament), curated with the signature style only found in Dalí’s work. This series also includes Jeremiah, Noah’s Ark, The Rock, and more. Each image showcases Dali’s impeccable draftsmanship. In the Bible, King Solomon, son to King David, was extremely wealthy and wise. Solomon reigned over Israel for almost 40 years, and he amassed many luxuries during his reign. He was also heavily involved in the construction of great architecture, including fortified towns, water conduits and more.
“King Solomon” displays Dalí’s unmistakable style and reputable skill. This image depicts King Solomon sitting at his royal golden throne, wrapped in elegant light blue robes. The grandeur of Solomon’s life as the king of Israel is apparent in this image as it is decorated with beautiful accessories and furnishings fit for royalty. Solomon’s hair is long and brown and falls on his shoulders, while his lovely gold crown with red crystals sits atop his head. King Solomon has deep blue eyes and curly facial hair. He appears to be guiding his hand indicating that he is giving directions to someone. In his opposite hand, he proudly holds a golden scepter adorned with more red crystals. Dalí’s precise strokes and delicate use of color are what make this piece so fascinating. “King Solomon” is a 22.25 x 15.5-inch hand-signed engraving created in 1975.
