About the Work
"The Amorous Sleep" is a hand-signed engraving in the Le Paradis Perdu series. The image size is 10.5 x 8.25 inches.
Regarded as one of the most important works in literature, John Milton’s Paradise Lost (Paradis Perdu) was illustrated in ten color etchings by master Salvador Dalí in 1974. The simplicity of line and careful draftsmanship exhibit the very turmoil of man’s battle with the temptation of Satan. This series is noted as having some of Dalí’s sharpest lines.
This beautiful image displays the story of The Amorous Sleep in Milton's text. In it, Dalí creates an alluring scene in which love is portrayed in a surrealistic manner. On top of the image, the nude figure of a man lies with his legs crossed and arms spread wide. This man has long curly hair and a dark curly beard. He extends his left arm out and releases vines from within. These vines run through his arm like veins and pour out onto the woman figure below. Underneath, a woman lies with her large eyes closed and lips puckered. The leafy vines drape over her as to represent the man's love smothering the woman ever so delicately. Massive mountains are distant in the background, similarly to those in "The Temptation".
About the Artist
Spanish Artist Salvador Dalí was a Surrealist icon best known for his articulate skill and exquisite works of art. Dalí is among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century, partially due to his explorations of subconscious imagery. He practiced sculpting, printmaking, fashion, advertising, filmmaking and more. His flamboyant personality and mischievousness contributed to his rise to becoming an international celebrity, however, his mastery of art is arguably his most distinct attribute.
