About the Work

"Bracelets" is an expertly crafted, embossed serigraph on paper with foil stamping and an image size of 20.25 x 9.5". From the edition of 650 and is estate-stamped 'Erté' lower right. Framed in a classic 'reed and ribbon' gold-tone moulding. The artwork ships framed and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Erté’s twenty-two-year association with Harper’s Bazaar sparked the creation of innumerable fashion designs for some of the world’s most glamorous women. Among his many ingenious creations were designs for jewelry and fashion accessories. The true beauty of each of the images lies in their delicate simplicity and the originality of their design.

The original designs for the serigraph suite ‘Fashion and Jewelry’ were created by Erté between 1922 and 1924, the same period in which he was heavily involved in designing costumes and stage sets for theater and opera in New York and Paris. Clearly infected by a sense of drama and playful eroticism, these images are a culmination of his involvement in these other art forms.

Bracelets depicts two unique red arm cuffs from which silver chains drop and culminate in a delicate tassel.

Martin Lawrence Galleries is an affiliate of Erté's publisher Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts. This print is therefore as new, with no prior ownership, coming straight from the publisher.

About the Artist

Erté was born Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Russia on November 23rd, 1892 and was raised amidst Russia's social elite. At the age of five he created an evening gown for his mother and managed to persuade the adults to craft it, they were astounded by the results. In 1912, Romain left St. Petersburg for Paris at the age of nineteen with the aim of becoming an artist. After working with Paul " Le Magnifique" Poiret on several theatrical productions Romain, still under the pseudonym of Erte, began to work more independently. He hand-crafted original costume and fashion designs for many of the era’s most renowned actresses, including Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, Marion Davies, Anna Pavlova, Norma Shearer, and others. His masterpieces for the stage included extravagant production designs at venues such as New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the Casino de Paris, and the Paris Opera. In 1915 he began his long professional relationship with Harper's Bazaar and created 240 covers for the esteemed magazine. For 6 months in 1916, Erté simultaneously worked with Vogue as well. As a result of his highly publicized success, Erté would later be called the father of the ‘Art Deco’ movement.
