"L.C." was created in celebration of Leo Castelli’s 90th Birthday and the 40th Anniversary of Leo Castelli’s New York Gallery, which showcased work from some of the most prominent artists of the day. New York art dealer Leo Castelli (1907–1999) played a pivotal role in postwar American art’s rise to international dominance. The art was commissioned by Castelli’s son, Jean-Cristophe, and published in Leo Castelli’s 90th Birthday Portfolio as part of an edition of 90 that marked each year of Castelli’s long life. The portfolio included a powerhouse of other artists’ work including: Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Joseph Kosuth, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, and Richard Serra.
