About the Work

This work is the creation of both Mark Grotjahn and Takashi Murakami. "Untitled (Scarlet Lake and Indigo Blue Butterfly 826)" is an offset lithograph measuring 27.5 x 22-inches.

This collaborative work encompass Grotjahn (1968- ) and Murakami’s (1962- ) unique styles and combine recognizable traits from both artists’ œuvres.  Specifically, this pair of prints employs Grotjahn’s distinctive linear perspective and his ability to render three-dimensionality on a flat surface while showcasing Murakami’s calligraphic marks and wildly popular graphic sensibility. Both works fairly vibrate with energy and movement despite their deceptively simple composition and would inject color and interest into any contemporary art collection. These would also be an excellent addition to a collection of more traditional Japanese or Asian artworks as a means of introducing a dialogue between traditional calligraphic works and contemporary art.

About the Artist

Takashi Murakami was born in Tokyo, Japan on February 1, 1962. His influence for art derives from his mother, who studied needlepoint and designed textiles. Murakami knew he wanted to be an artist when he grew up, and had always taken a large interest in animation and comics. He studied art throughout much of his adolescence, and applied to study at Tokyo National University. He was accepted and later received his Ph.D. in Fine Arts and Music, in which he learned “Nihong”, or traditional Japanese painting. After his studies, Murakami moved to New York in 1994 and was exposed to, and inspired by, Western contemporary artists like Jeff Koons.
