Erté - Romain de Tirtoff
Erte, born Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Russia, on November 23rd, 1892, grew up amidst Russia's social elite. Despite initial discouragement in Paris, he joined Paul Poiret's fashion house, setting the stage for his revolutionary impact on Parisian fashion. He excelled in theatrical costume design, collaborating with renowned actresses.
In 1915, his partnership with Harper's Bazaar began, producing 240 covers over two decades. This collaboration, along with his work for Vogue, solidified his fame in America. Erté's success labeled him the father of the 'Art Deco' movement. Notable for extravagant Folies-Bergère and George White's Scandals costumes, he briefly worked in Hollywood in 1925.
After a period of obscurity in the 1940s and 1950s, Erté's style found renewed popularity in the 1960s. At seventy-five, he embarked on a new career, recreating youthful designs in bronze and serigraphy, reviving the 'Art Deco' movement. In 1976, the French government honored him, and in 1982, he received the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris. Erté passed away in April 1990 at ninety-seven, leaving a lasting legacy in prestigious museums worldwide.
