Artist Profile
Philippe bertho
"TO FOOL THE EYE IS MECHANICAL, TO PROVOKE THE IMAGINATION IS SPIRITUAL."
Philippe Bertho (b. 1964) is a French contemporary painter known for reinventing trompe l’œil with wit, humor, and theatrical imagination. Classically trained in Reims, Bertho moved beyond traditional illusionism to create playful, surreal worlds filled with tiny, mischievous figures.
His characters—often inspired by Norman Rockwell, Monty Python, and the slapstick traditions of cinema—perform, explore, and tumble across the canvas with a sense of wonder and curiosity. Each painting becomes a miniature stage where humor and narrative unfold.
