About the Work
"Placadezz" is an oil and acrylic on canvas created by Kenny Scharf in 1997. The artwork is signed, titled and dated 'Kenny Scharf Placadezz '97' on verso. Framed in a vibrant teal custom artist frame, the frame size is 20.88 x 26.75". The artwork ships framed.
Created in 1997, “Placadezz” is a vibrant example of Kenny Scharf’s mature 1990s practice, when his signature universe of floating orbs, animated faces, and biomorphic forms reached a confident and fully realized expression. Emerging from the East Village scene of the 1980s, Scharf developed a singular Pop-surrealist language that merges cartoon iconography, cosmic fantasy, and subtle cultural commentary.
Executed in oil and acrylic, the painting features the high-gloss surface and saturated palette that define his most celebrated works. Five purple orbs drift across the upper portion of the canvas, establishing an interplanetary atmosphere where gravity dissolves and forms hover in suspension. On either side, two cartoon-like heads extend their tongues inward toward a central pink biomorphic figure that oscillates between creature, symbol, and cosmic nucleus. From below, two yellow tail-like forms rise upward, creating a strong vertical rhythm that energizes the composition and frames the central exchange.
Scharf’s palette of grape purples, vivid pinks, aqua blues, and electric yellows is exuberant yet carefully orchestrated. Color functions as both emotional catalyst and compositional structure, guiding the eye across a dynamic network of interlocking shapes. Beneath the surface playfulness lies a deliberate balance of form and saturation that underscores the artist’s technical command.
Integral to the work is its hand-carved, custom artist’s frame. Sculptural and organic, the aqua-toned frame extends the painting into three-dimensional space. Its undulating contours and glyph-like embellishments reinforce Scharf’s total-art approach, dissolving the boundary between painting and object and amplifying the sense of movement and vitality.
While immediately joyful, “Placadezz” also reflects deeper themes present throughout Scharf’s oeuvre, including mutation, interconnectedness, and the absurdity of contemporary life. The playful dialogue between its animated forms suggests a communal ecosystem where identities remain fluid and transformation is constant. For collectors, the work encapsulates Scharf at his most compelling, combining chromatic intensity, sculptural innovation, and an unmistakable spirit of imaginative optimism.
